Hear from our Chief Technology Officer

What you will do:

    • Take ownership over our front-end ecosystem. We’re changing the group retirement landscape by delivering a first-class user experience that focuses on making retirement goals simple, understandable, and achievable, with designs that are clear and intuitive. As the Principal Front-End Engineer joining our team, you will lead major new features and strategic initiatives. These will include changes to the portals that are used by plan members, employers, our advisor partners, as well as internal users. You will spend much of your time writing clean, re-usable code, evolving our front-end architecture, updating our component libraries, and making sure that your changes are understood by other members of the front-end team.
    • Collaborate with our product team and other teams to make significant improvements to the application. You will work closely with our product team to help inform and scope larger features and initiatives. You will focus on developing a strong understanding of our product, customers, partners, and market, empowering you to make decisions that will drive the most value. You will find opportunities to simplify and streamline work, driving engineering efficiency. We encourage you to question assumptions and requirements, and work to achieve timely delivery of these features in a way that balances code quality, value delivery, and long-term maintainability.
    • Focus on continuous improvement and maintenance. In addition to coordinating releases, leading testing, and automation for your builds, you will help others with code reviews and testing of their work. As our Principal Front-End Engineer, you will also own the maintenance and improvement of our products. You look after the application in a way that lends itself to effective maintenance and make updates when you notice things are outdated or can be improved. You think about how to incorporate non-functional concerns (i.e. security risks, library upgrades, scalability) into our product roadmap in a way that balances short-term delivery needs with long-term scalability and evolution.

Who you are:

    • Well-versed in our technology stack, including cloud architectures and front-end deployment patterns. You’re a React+Typescript expert, who also has a deep understanding of Redux and automated testing. We’re looking for you to be able to hit the ground running from a technology standpoint and be able to mentor other team members. You have deployed React application on AWS, understand how code is built and deployed using services like CodeBuild, CodePipeline, CloudFront, S3, and Lambda@Edge. You have actively used testing frameworks like Cypress, Jest, and have worked with Storybook in the past.
    • Clear communicator who is focused on business outcomes. You are inherently curious about an organization’s business goals and like to think about how your work supports and advances those goals. You are keen to work with other teams like sales, marketing, and customer success to understand their needs and the needs of whom they serve, and in turn can clearly share that understanding with other members of the engineering team, both in group discussions, and in working on user stories.
    • Thrive with a high degree of responsibility. You’re a senior leader on a team who enjoys being front and center on big projects. You thrive on taking ownership of your work and know how to drive towards outcomes and get things done no matter what.
    • Self-starter who is comfortable with ambiguity. You are excited by the challenge of jumping in and starting, even if you don’t have perfect information. Your experience working with consumer-facing products has given you the right mix of intuition and judgement to be able to problem-solve and move projects forward where questions are still present.
    • Collaborative team member. You understand that great products are built through working with many different stakeholders. You can build strong relationships with other mission-driven team members, including those outside of the engineering group. You have worked closely with product team members in the past, and you value hearing from our customers about what they expect from our product, where it exceeds their needs, and where there’s room for improvement. You enjoy providing support and guidance to earlier-career engineering colleagues so they can learn, grow, and improve.

Why work with us:

Working at Common Wealth provides you the opportunity to work in a high-growth business that is changing the lives of Canadians. Joining our team of mission-driven developers means you have considerable autonomy over your day-to-day work, and can help to disrupt the Canadian retirement landscape. In addition to a competitive salary ($120k – $140k), health and dental benefits, an additional health spending account, a 5% employer match into one of our award-winning group retirement plans (it also helps to use the product you’re building), and 4 weeks of vacation, Common Wealth also offers a stock-option plan. For this role we expect you to live in the Greater Toronto Area and be available to attend weekly on-site meetings at our downtown Toronto office with the other key members of the product and engineering team. Our growing team combines deep expertise in the key disciplines necessary to help our customers achieve retirement success. Our development team is willing to support your growth in whatever direction you wish. You will receive regular 1:1s, and bi-annual performance reviews where managers actively help you build learning and development plans.
