What you will do:

    • Take ownership of the finance initiatives while building out the function: You will be the primary owner of the finance function within Common Wealth. You will work to mature and develop the department internally, as well as own the financial modeling activities for the business. Currently, we do not have anyone in the function, so you will be required to take over the core finance activities for the company. Some examples include transaction processes and risk management activities. You enjoy digging into unit economics and identifying the opportunities to improve. Having a growth mindset comes easily to you – you are constantly thinking about ways to drive sales and implement continuous improvements within the finance function.
    • Strategic financial analysis: You will constantly be scanning the market to position Common Wealth as an innovative company from a financial perspective. We will look to your expertise on building out the people and processes, while keeping the business needs top of mind. You will have full autonomy to present your strategic vision for the finance department, from strategic negotiations, corporate development, fundraising and operations, while helping execute on that vision. You will come up with and influence how we at Common Wealth price out plans/services while connecting it to the financial model. Providing strategic and insightful counsel to senior leadership team and Board is something you love to do.
    • Reporting & internal support: You will be in charge of preparing all of the financial reports needed at Common Wealth. We currently have controls built out, but we are looking for someone to improve those controls and execute on the reporting activities. You will improve financial and accounting practices to allow them to scale with the business growth. You are familiar and can leverage using reporting tools and accounting software to aid in getting your job done in the most efficient manner. You will be working with the various teams across the organization to help increase the financial drivers. You will act as the main liaison between vendors, such as the bookkeeper and external service providers and the business. You enjoy looking at the work from a holistic process improvement and efficiency perspective.

Who you are:

    • You focus on what is going right while solving problems: You can easily spot the problem, but you are more excited about the opportunity to fix it. Your mindset is inherently positive when approaching lesser than ideal situations. You are great at prioritizing the most important work and do not get overwhelmed easily. At a startup, you are keenly aware of the importance of exercising judgment in decision-making when approaching your work.
    • You are comfortable with the unknown: We are a fast-growing company and often have a variety of priorities at one time which change frequently. You need to be comfortable working in an environment that will continue to evolve. You thrive in uncertainty and are able to bring order to the department and the finance function. You are continually honing your craft, and keeping up with the best tools for the job.
    • You are a person of integrity: Honesty, trust and ethical decision-making are at the core of who we are. These are important to you, and you model these values in your decision-making and in your interactions with colleagues, customers, and stakeholders. You not only value setting the financial strategic vision for the company, but you equally enjoy rolling up your sleeves and executing on the work.
    • You are detail-oriented: You realize that taking the time to pay attention to the details will reward you in the end. You enjoy looking at the specifics of each and every situation because you know the value it provides. Evidence-based decision making is where you are most comfortable.
    • You are an exceptional communicator: You know how to confidently and impactfully digest, simplify and relay information to a broad range of stakeholders. You are comfortable in your ability to communicate and collaborate with various people to enhance the financial state of Common Wealth. You are an expert at simplifying concepts for other leaders and people within the organization to help build financial literacy.

Why work with us:

Common Wealth is a fast-growing company with a mission to change the lives of Canadians. Joining our team will allow you the opportunity to have firsthand experience shaping and influencing key decisions about the organization. You will have a great amount of autonomy in your job and how you organize your day-to-day. You will be joining a team of like-minded mission-driven disruptors who want to improve the Canadian retirement landscape. In addition to a competitive salary, you will receive health and dental benefits, life insurance, an additional Health Spending Account, a 5% employer match into one of our award-winning group retirement plans, and four weeks of vacation. We are a remote-friendly workplace with an office in downtown Toronto for those who prefer to work from the office.
